Hubby and I have an anniversary in December and are thinking of venturing out of town for a night in Charlottesville. Ideally we'd find a nice Inn/B&B and a nice place for dinner (price not an option if worth the price) that would be romantic but not stuffy. We're considering the Inn & restaurant at Barboursville but don't know much about it.
If you're not looking for a one-stop-shopping setup. I've always been a fan of the 200 South St. Inn in downtown C'ville. And just a few blocks down Main St is L'Etoile for a great dinner.
Yes they are close; I was actually being literal about "just a few blocks." Depending on the weather in Dec it could be a pleasant walk. Otherwise it is just a straight drive down Main St. maybe 1/2 a mile.
Also close by is C&O. Its been a couple of years since I've been and I wouldnt' say it is 100% but it is very good and definitely a romantic place.
C&O is much different than it used to be. (One big clue is that there are no dates on any of the reviews and accolades they list on their website.) Years ago the upstairs used to be one of the best dining destinations not only in Charlottesville but in Virginia. At the time they had different menus for up and down. They changed the format of the place many years ago and went to one menu and then tried to take it back a bit more upscale but it never quite recovered. It's an ok to good restaurant but personally I wouldn't choose it for nor recommend it for something like an anniversary.
I'm sorry to hear that. I always thought it was especially romantic on a cold night near the fire. And they had a great wine selection. Oh well.
We stayed at Clifton Inn just last week. It's a Relais and Chateaux property about 5 miles outside Charlottesville. I just loved it. Food was great. It's a 3 or 4 or 5 course menu with traditional categories (appetizers soups salads entrees desserts). However you can order as many from any category. Service was exceptional. This is one of those places where they anticipate everything you might need!
Late last spring I found a winter package at the beautiful Keswick called Winter Hibernations. It is being offered now and includes a 3 course dinner and a continental breakfast at a very reasonable price. The Signature room was pleasant; the surroundings are lovely and I imagine you could upgrade to a five course meal if requested.. We'll return this winter. To me eating and snoozing all in one place is a real bonus.
I would second first suggestion for Keswick Hall. It is an elegant property nice golf course and spa if they interest you and wonderful resturant. When we were there restaurant was all white and the food and the guests sparkled. Our room was large and luxurious. It is a very romantic place about 10 minutes from Downtown Mall in Keswick horse country. It is not at all stuffy and service is terrific. Prices and usually qiuite high and if there is a special going on when you want to visit it will probably be perfect. Check out their website
In downtown mall we also like Bizou alot. It's a great place for lunch. Not a romantic dinner place but food is memorable.
I'm also a big fan of 200 South Street Inn. It's a beautiful old home that is Downtown and within walking distance of many nice local restaurants and shops. L'Etoile is excellent and romantic. Zocalo is a little more modern and the food is incredible ( And there's a new wine bar on the Downtown Mall called Enoteca. It would be a great place to have a small bite and a glass of wine before or after dinner or in the middle of the day.
I'm a huge fan of the Silver Thatch Inn. Incredibly romantic setting feels like you're out in the country not in the middle of Charlottesville and a wonderful breakfast complementary glass of wine dessert for under $200. I have not had dinner there but the menu looked excellent and it should be based on breakfast and dessert. I would go to Fleurie on the downtown mall or L'etoile for a romantic meal.
