Citizenship and Immigration Services employee accused of defrauding HUD of $46,235 in funds between 2002 and 2006; * Cheryl Demetra Esters. 45 of Dallas an Internal Revenue function employee accused of defrauding HUD of $34,869 between 2002 and 2006; * Bonita Yvonne Fisher. 45 of Hutchins a Department of Veterans Affairs employee accused of defrauding HUD of $7,840 between 2005 and 2006; * Michelle Salisbury Parker of Dallas a former IRS employee accused of defrauding HUD of $26,950 between 2002 and 2005; and * Mary Beth Sabala of Plano a U. S. Department of Agriculture employee and former IRS employee accused of defrauding HUD of $31,450 between 2003 and 2006. A spokeswoman for the U. S. Attorney’s office said the crimes are not related. All the accused workers acted on their own independently of one another. The indictments were made under a HUD initiative called “Operation FedRent.” The schedule seeks to determine and prosecute federal government employees who lie about their incomes to get rental subsidies thus denying that assistance to eligible families. The five employees are accused of obtaining a total of $147,344 in HUD Section 8 payments — payments that make up the difference between what a low-income household can afford and their fair-market contract for a housing unit. Each employee is accused of concealing her income as a federal employees when applying for HUD Section 8 rental assistance according to the indictment.
